EEOC Reports Increased Sex Harassment Charges, Lawsuits in FY 2018

Last week, the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) released its preliminary report on sexual harassment claims for fiscal year 2018. The EEOC reported a 12% jump in charges filed with the agency compared with 2017, as well as a staggering 50% increase in the number of lawsuits filed on behalf of employees by the agency. The EEOC’s fiscal year ended on September 30, 2018.

Much of this increase can be attributed to the rise of the #MeToo movement and the courage of employees experiencing sexual harassment to come forward to report unlawful treatment by coworkers, supervisors and employers. However, workplace sexual harassment, gender discrimination and harassment based on age, disability and race have all seen steady increases in recent years. And while some employers have taken steps to address workplace harassment, the unlawful conduct persists.
