May 25, 2021

Yesterday, firm attorneys Joni Thome, Chris Jozwiak, and Matt Nolan presented at the 2021 Upper Midwest Employment Law Institute (ELI). ELI is a prominent two-day conference for employment lawyers and human resource professionals from across the upper Midwest to gather and discuss the latest developments in employment law. Joni, Chris, and Matt joined other local attorneys in presenting on important employment law topics at this year’s conference.

Joni Thome joined attorney Megan Anderson to answer critical questions about legal protections for LGBTQ+ workers in a presentation titled “LGBTQ+ Employee Rights – 17 Common Questions and Their Answers”. Questions like “What are an employer’s obligations related to restrooms, locker rooms and the like?” and “What are some of the best practices for creating a nondiscriminatory and inclusive workplace?” were discussed.

Chris Jozwiak joined attorney Sara Gullickson McGrane to discuss reduction in force (RIF) cases in a presentation titled “Litigation Reduction-in-Force Cases – Strategic Discovery and Motion Practice”. Jozwiak and McGrane presented plaintiff and defense counsel perspectives and strategies for RIF cases. They also discussed the rise of these types of cases due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the complexity involved in litigating them.

Matt Nolan joined attorney Danielle Fitzsimmons in a presentation titled “2021 ADA Case Law Update – Key New Cases and Their Practical Implications”. They discussed the outcomes of recent Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) cases and the impact on future litigation.
