Massie and Thome To Present at 2018 Human Rights Symposium

November 29, 2018 – Firm attorneys Dustin Massie and Joni Thome will present at the Minnesota Department of Human Rights’ 2018 Human Rights Symposium to be held on December 4-5, 2018, on the University of Minnesota’s campus. The presentation, entitled “The Impact of Political Polarization: Proving Discrimination through Political Speech,” is part of two-day seminar exploring how Minnesota must address the extraordinary challenges confronting the state and the country around issues of human and civil rights and the importance of equity in employment, housing, education and healthcare during these tumultuous times.

In their presentation, Massie and Thome will use real world examples to examine recent case law to demonstrate how political views and statements can, and have been, used to prove discrimination. While public employees are protected from discrimination based on political activity and affiliation under the First Amendment and the Civil Services Reform Act, Minnesota employees of private employers are not. However, in Minnesota, there are times when voicing a political opinion can lead to allegations that the employer is biased against an employee based on protected characteristics such as race, national origin, sexual orientation, or religion.
